BAGUIO CITY, Oct. 8 (PNA) - The Baguio city government and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) are set to implement measures to eliminate illegal recruiters in the area to protect the interests of hundreds of qualified residents applying for jobs abroad.

City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. said a number of the natives of the Cordillera region in northern Luzon were among the more than 7,000 job applicants nationwide who were duped by alleged illegal recruiters last year.

He said the joint undertaking of making Baguio as "illegal recruitment-free" was embodied in a recent memorandum of agreement (MOA) which he and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) administrator Jennifer Hardin-Manalili signed.

Records show that due to the success of the educational system here and the region which include the technical-vocational education program, the Cordilleras had contributed a great percentage to the total Philippines' overseas contract workers in the past five years. (PNA)
