Cebu City plans new P300-M, 15-hectare landfill
CEBU
CITY, Sept. 16 (PNA) -– The Cebu City government is planning to put up
a P300-million state-of-the-art sanitary landfill in a 15-hectare lot
in the upland Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmena said the landfill will use the latest technology to protect the environment.
He also pledged at least P5 million worth of projects for the host barangay.
Osmena
said the landfill in Kalunasan will be safe, sanitary, will create
livelihood opportunities for the people and will be much better than
the existing sanitary landfill in Barangay Inayawan since it will be
able to convert waste to energy and earn carbon credits for Cebu City.
He
appeased barangay officials and residents of Kalunasan and assured they
will be consulted before any project is implemented there.
He
said he has already given instructions to conduct studies on his
proposal, which includes opening a road network leading to the
facility.
Kalunasan officials earlier expressed their surprise
over the mayor’s plan, and said they were not briefed or consulted on the matter.
Osmena
said the study will include an assessment of the location and site
visits to check where the roads will be opened, as well as the impact
of the facility on the environment.
He said the city will consult the constituents in the area.
”No
decision will be made until all the studies are done. And any place of
the barangay where the landfill will be built will get more than P5
million worth of projects. They will be heavily favored by the
administration,” Osmena said. (PNA)
