RP produces 4M goats a year – DA Davao
DAVAO
CITY, Jan. 9 (PNA) – The country is now producing a total of four
million goats a year, according to Department of Agriculture (DA) Davao
livestock division chief Dr. Rafael Mercado.
Mercado said the country’s requirement for goat is 20 folds higher compared to actual production.
He
said Davao Region alone contributes about 3,072 of the four million
yearly productions nationwide, surpassing its target of one percent in
2008.
However, the lack of goat supply hinders the country from engaging in goat meat export.
To date, Brunei is in demand of 1,000 goat meat per month, while Dubai needs more at 3,000 per month.
Mercado said the global demand for goat’s meat has inspired local raisers from Mindanao to increase production.
To
meet the goat supply requirement abroad, DA has started implementing
the artificial insemination last year, in line with its Unified
National Artificial Insemination Program. (PNA)
