Science-on-the-Move exhibit in Carmen, Davao del Norte

CARMEN, Davao del Norte, Dec. 4 (PNA) -- About 50 science and technology gadgets are now on display until Dec. 7 at the Carmen Municipal Gym and is open for viewing and exploring not just by the young but also by adults.

The gadgets which explain the wonders of science and technology (S&T) are part of the Science-on-the-Move exhibit organized by the Regional Council for Research and Development (RECORD) Foundation Inc., Mindanao Science and Technology Centrum Foundation (MSTCF) Inc., and the Department of Education (DepEd) XI in cooperation with the Philippine Science Centrum and the municipal government of Carmen.

The exhibit has been made possible through the Congressional Office of Davao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Antonio Lagdameo who has extended his resources to transport the science gadgets to Carmen town.

Lagdameo also shelled out P350,000 to pay for the general admission fee of some 7,000 students from various public schools in Carmen.

In appreciating the exhibit, Carmen Mayor Marcelino A. Perandos told the students that immense learning opportunity is a stone-throw away, stressing that by exploring S&T gadgets it would help them gain better understanding of science.

"Kaning mga butanga wala sa among panahon, (we don't have these things during our time)," the mayor said in his speech.

He hoped that the exhibit would "tickle" the minds of the students to further explore their surroundings and someday become scientists.

Some of the S&T gadgets on display are the anti-gravity mirror, Archimedes' Screw, Bicycle gear, bone stress, colored shadows, eddy current brake and current disc, finger tingler, flashing pendulum, floating aluminum, gyroscope, hexagonal kaleidoscope, hydropower, hyperbolic slot, hyperboloid string, magnetic field.

Also found in the exhibit are magnetizer/demagnetizer, mirage, money detector, pedal power, phosphorescence wall, photovoltaic cells, plasma sphere, rotating disc, saltwater battery, uphill roller, wind power, gravity well, water parabola, among others.

Delia Moran-Morados, president and chief executive officer of the MSTCF, said some of the gadgets are from the Philippine Science Centrum in Manila which has been organizing the Science-on-the-Move while the rest are from the MSTCF.

After the one-week exhibit in Carmen, Davao del Norte, the S&T gadgets will be transported to Cagayan de Oro City and be loaded into a Negros Navigation ship on which the Science-on-the-Move will be on display for passengers from Misamis Oriental to Manila to have a chance to explore and understand some of the S&T concepts.
