By Garry A. Vacunawa
CATARMAN,
Northern Samar, July 5 (PNA) –- The University of Eastern Philippines
(UEP) has started operating five new income-generating projects (IGPs)
as part of its effort to be self-reliant and not fully dependent on
support from the national government.
UEP
president Atty. Mar De Asis enumerated the five IGPs in a recent press
conference which was held at the pavilion of UEP White Beach and
Recreation Center, one of the newest IGPs.
The
other four IGPs are the UEP Commercial Center, UEP Garments and Textile
Center, UEP Woodwork and Concrete and UEP Water Refilling Station.
According
to De Asis, the said IGPs are expected to generate income that will
augment not only the univesity’s Maintenance and Other Operating
Expenses (MOOE) but also the other benefits due to the university
employees.
De Asis admitted to the members of the media that they do not have enough funds, that is why they go into IGPs.
UEP, according to him, has P13 million MOOE for the whole year.
It
was learned that all IGPs in UEP are under the supervision of the
Auxiliary Services and Business Affairs (ASBA) with Dr. Eduardo I.
Alvarez as its director.
De
Asis informed that the university IGPs are not conceptualized only for
the sole purpose of increasing the income of the university but they
are also used as instructional and laboratory facilities for students,
especially those enrolled in the Business Administration, Engineering,
Home Economics, Environmental Studies, and Hotel and Restaurant
Management.
These
projects will give a chance to the students to experience real work
situations which they cannot get from the four corners of their
classrooms. Besides, the students will not spend too much for their
practicum and field trips.
In
her article published at UEPDATES (official publication of UEP), Nimfa
De Veyna, publication coordinator, informed that the UEP Commercial
Center has 15 commercial stalls open for occupancy with monthly rents.
The commercial center is in front of the College of Arts and Communication (CAC) Building.
She
added that the UEP Garments and Textile Center is under the direct
management of the College of Business Administration (CBA) Dean Roche
E. Barreda. It is now working on the new uniforms of the university and
it is housed at the Farmers Training Center.
The
UEP Water Refilling Station, according to her, will answer the drinking
water needs of the increasing populace of the university. It is found
along the highway and managed by Mrs. Norma Delorino in UEP Zone 1,
beside the Fisheries Department.
On
the other hand, the UEP Woodwork and Concrete Products is into
producing furniture, hollow/decorative blocks and concrete paver. It is
found along the highway in UEP Zone 1, and managed by Engr. Noriel
Getalado.
The UEP White Beach Resort and Recreational Center will serve as one of the newest tourist attractions in the province.
According to De Veyra, it is being developed into a wholesome outdoor and indoor recreational center.
Aside
from the beach cottages, other facilities are being constructed such as
pavilion, lagoon and boats, swimming pool to complete its recreational
package. (PNA)
