QC hosts 2010 World TB Day
MANILA,
March 15 (PNA) - Quezon City hosts anew the country’s World TB Day
commemoration on March 24, highlighting the Philippines’ continuing
commitment to fight tuberculosis.
QC Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., as honorary chair of the
2010 World TB day observance, is expected to deliver the welcome
remarks.
Quezon Memorial Circle has been chosen as venue for the
celebration, which has theme: “Continue the campaign against TB in a new
way.”
Quezon City also hosted the activity in 2006.
Nationwide, the
World TB Day commemoration is organized and coordinated by the
Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PHILCAT).
PHILCAT’s advocacy activities are geared towards creating
public awareness in the eradication of tuberculosis in the country.
Other speakers invited at the QC program include Health
Secretary Esperanza Cabral, World Health Representative to the
Philippines Dr. Soe Nyunt-U and PhilCAT national chair Dr. Elizabeth
Cadena.
Organizers have also invited US Ambassador Harry Thomas as
guest speaker.
The QC government, under the administration of Mayor
Belmonte, has adopted programs –including the Sagip Baga– to prevent the
spread of tuberculosis, which to date, remains as one of the leading
causes of death in the Philippines.
In 2009, the city government set aside P4.5 million for its
anti-TB program, to include, among others, the purchase of medicines and
its distribution to different health centers.
The city’s anti-TB program now also covered treatment of TB
cases among children.(PNA)
