DOJ anti-terror council hopes to get more funds from Congress in 2009
MANILA,
Nov. 26 (PNA)--Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary and
Anti-Terror Council (ATC) Chief Ricardo Blancaflor is hoping that
Congress will allocate more funds for the council in 2009 so that it
can carry out its campaign against terrorist groups more efficiently
and effectively.
Blancaflor
said that an additional funding from Congress would also enable them to
put in place a more comprehensive terrorist monitoring system, aside
from acquiring new surveillance and anti-terrorist equipment.
But
despite being hampered by insufficient funds, Blancaflor said that the
ATC is doing its best in going after and prosecuting terrorist groups
in the country.
He
cited the case of three suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)
who were earlier charged with violating the Philippines' Human Security
Act (HSA) at a North Cotabato regional court last week.
The
DOJ undersecretary earlier urged lawmakers to expedite the passage of
laws that would mete stiffer penalty to individuals or groups caught in
possession of explosive compounds or ammunition. (PNA)
