MANILA,
Sept. 12 (PNA) -- Grandmaster Eugene Torre's five-game winning streak
screeched to a halt Thursday when second-seed GM Zhang Zhong of
Singapore forced him to a draw in the sixth round of the 3rd PGMA Cup
in Paranaque City.
However,
the 56-year-old Torre remains the man to beat in the international
chess tournament with his 5.5 points out of a possible six points.
Torre leads just by a half-point over second placer, GM Li Chao of China, his seventh round opponent on Friday.
Four
foreign GMs occupy third to sixth places with 4.6 points apiece,
including Mikheil Mched-Lishvili who beat Filipino International Master
(IM) Julio Sadorra.
The 14-year-old Super GM Wesley So towed five Filipino compatriots to occupy the fifth to 17th spots with four points each.
So
trounced IM Richard Bitoon to keep his hopes alive for another
impressive performance following three straight powercast competitions.
Others
Filipinos belonging to the four-point bunch are GM Darwin Laylo who
defeated IM Weiming Goh, FIDE Master Adrian Pacis who downed Wan
Yungao, IM Barlo Nadera who drubbed Zhang Ziyan and GM Mark Paragua and
IM John Paul Gomez who drew their match against each other.
The
exciting seventh round match pairings will feature GM Laylo versus
fourth-seed GM Ehsan Ghae-Maghami of Iran, Super GM So against Wang Li,
FIDE Master Pacis versus So Weiqui, GM Paragua against IM Nadera and
Gomez versus GM Marat Dzhumaev. (PNA) |
