Pichay/Davis Chess listup on

MANILA, March 11 (PNA) -- Registration for the first Pichay and Davis Cup chess festival is ongoing with the event slated March 28 at the Blue Wave Mall along Macapagal Avenue near Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

The country’s top Grandmasters, headed by Joey Antonio and Bong Villamayor, are expected to see action in the event, which will have four categories offering a total prize pot of P100,000.

Group A will be an all Master Invitational, Group B will be an Open category, Group C will be an under-20 tournament while Group D will be for players 12 years old and below.

Deadline for listup is on March 25.

No entry fee will be charged for Group A participants while fees for Groups B and C are pegged at P300 each and Group D P250.

The tournament, organized and sponsored by Davis de Leon and National Chess Federation of the Philippines chairman and president Butch Pichay, will be limited to 300 participants on a first come, first served basis.

Villamayor, winner of the recent PSC Expo Rapid chess tournament, has confirmed his participation along with Antonio and fellow GMs Paragua, Jayson Gonzales, Darwin Laylo and John Paul Gomez, ensuring a battle royale in the centerpiece event to be played under a knockout system format.

The rest of the categories will be a seven-round Swiss system tournament, hosted by the Blue Wave Mall. (PNA)
